Maryland REALTORS® serves professional REALTOR® members from Maryland. We are responsible for developing public policy, legislative advocacy, political affairs, legal and regulatory services, education, professional standards, and communications programs. The Associate Counsel provides legal advice and counsel to the trade association on a wide variety of topics. The Associate Counsel will staff and support various Association committees, provide content for the Association’s web site, videos, and other materials, be responsible for staffing the Association’s Legal Hotline and teaching continuing education classes.
Primary Duties Include:
Staffing the Legal Hotline and ensuring timely responses to members.
Teaching continuing education classes and providing training and instruction to members, brokerages, local boards and associations, either in-person or virtually, on a variety of topics including ethics, fair housing, contracts and forms updates, legislative updates, and current or topical issues.
Writing articles for the Association’s magazine; drafting and reviewing legal articles, position papers and other legal materials.
Providing content for the Association’s web site and videos.
Staffing, supporting and managing various Association committees.
Keeping abreast of legal developments affecting real property, fair housing, real estate brokerages, property management, commercial real estate, and agency.
Performing legal research and generating memoranda as needed.
Requirements:
J.D. from ABA-accredited law school and admission to Maryland Bar are required.
Two to four years of legal experience, with background in trade associations preferred.
Outstanding customer service orientation; experience working in multicultural settings and/or collaborating in multicultural work groups a plus.
Knowledge of Federal and Maryland campaign finance and election laws a plus.
Familiarity with fair housing, real property, and real estate brokerages, preferred.
Computer literate (virtual meeting platforms, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Westlaw, internet research and use).
Superior legal reasoning, communication, and interpersonal skills are of the utmost importance.
Ability to work in a team environment and independently as needed.
Consistency in giving feedback regarding work progress, timetables, and issues.
