The American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, or AAZV, is the professional association for individuals who apply the principles of comparative veterinary medicine to zoo and wildlife species. Founded in 1946 by a handful of veterinarians working mostly part-time in zoos, today there are more than 1,300 members from over 50 countries. About 75% of members are in the US. AAZV members work in zoos and aquariums (52%), academia (15%), other clinical practices (15%), wildlife sanctuaries and free-ranging wildlife practices (9%), and a variety of other nonprofits, corporations, and governmental agencies.
