About the Position
AACC is seeking a Communications Specialist with strong writing experience and an interest in biology, medicine, or a related scientific field to join AACC’s Communications & PR team. The Specialist will work with the Communications & PR team and others in the organization to create content for news publications and communications programs that support AACC’s mission to advance the field of laboratory medicine.
This position will report to AACC’s Senior Manager of Communications & PR.
This is a hybrid position located in Washington, D.C.

Key Responsibilities
Work with internal staff at AACC to write press releases about organization news such as: research presented at the AACC Annual Scientific Meeting, the world’s leading conference for laboratory medicine; scientific studies published in AACC’s journals, Clinical Chemistry and The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine; AACC’s healthcare advocacy work; and organizational announcements. Also, communicate with researchers, AACC’s leadership, and other external press release stakeholders to ensure buy-in as appropriate.
Serve as a key member of the AACC social media team and write copy and implement campaigns initiated by that team.
Work with internal staff on corporate and presidential communications.
Write content and select images for AACC’s website (aacc.org) and use a website content management system to upload content and images to aacc.org.
Write and edit content as needed for Clinical Laboratory News (CLN), AACC’s award-winning monthly news magazine for laboratory medicine professionals (circulation: 70,000+ subscribers).
Write articles for the CLN Daily, a daily newspaper that is published onsite at the AACC Annual Scientific Meeting, as well as content for other AACC publications as needed.
Copyedit all news publications to ensure editorial follows AP and AACC style guidelines. Proofread galley proofs for all publications, enter corrections, and return to the designer.
Provide other editorial and production support for the Communications & PR team as needed.
Interact with all AACC employees to facilitate positive, productive working relationships.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in English, journalism, communications, or a related field; OR a bachelor’s or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, or a related field with experience and interest in communications and/or journalism. Additional work experience in lieu of degree will be considered.
2 to 4 years of experience and/or training in web/newspaper/newsletter/magazine writing, copyediting, and proofreading.
Or a combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the above.
Excellent writing skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Excellent attention to detail.
An ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and other Windows applications; Adobe Acrobat; and Zoom.
A background in biology or related scientific field is highly desirable.
Knowledge of proofreading marks, scientific units, and AP Style is also desirable.

AACC currently is working a hybrid office schedule with staff coming into the office one day a week with the ability to work remotely up to four days a week.
