Job Description:
Position Overview:
The Associate Editor works with the VP, Editorial Strategy, to write and edit news and feature content for ABA’s Daily Newsbytes and Banking Journal. This position also serves as back-up the VP on research and writing assignments and supports the full Member Comms team with writing, editing and proofreading projects. ABA Daily Newsbytes is ABA’s flagship email newsletter reaching 100,000+ banking professionals daily and is one of the highest-rated member resources the association provides.
Additionally, this position supports the Editorial Director with the content development and editorial planning for the association’s email bulletins, which cover a range of industry topics. In this capacity, the Associate Editor will serve as a liaison between Member Comms and designated subject matter experts on ABA’s policy team to generate a consistent flow of engaging, informative content for several specific topic areas. The associate editor will also use ABA’s newsletter platforms to prepare periodic emails for publication.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Write, edit and proofread copy for ABA Daily Newsbytes. Using following AP style, write brief news stories for daily publication of ABA Daily Newsbytes writing on banking policy issues and issues affecting America’s banks. Stories often include editorial coordination and collaboration with ABA subject matter experts.
- Build and transmit the Daily Newsbytes Email. Uses email platform(s) to build and test the Newsbytes email and ensure links are working properly.
- Manage content schedules for subject-specific ABA email bulletin publications. Work with ABA’s subject matter experts to develop and maintain an editorial calendar for a subset of subject-specific email bulletin publications. Use ABA’s email platform(s) to ensure email bulletins are ready for deployment each week.
- Support the ABA Banking Journal by developing story ideas and research content and sources for feature articles. Attends regular editorial meetings to research, pitch and develops tory ideas to produce top quality articles.
- Represent the ABA Banking Journal as a journalist at ABA and other industry events.
- Provide writing, editing and proofing support for other ABA publications, advocacy and marketing materials, speeches and other projects.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English or related field.
- 5+ years’ experience working in a writing or communications capacity required; at least two years’ experience writing and/or editing for a magazine, newspaper, online publication, communications firm and/or trade association. (Previous experience with covering government/a highly regulated industry preferred.)
- Experience with finance and banking preferred.
- Understanding of basic statistics.
- Experience with AP Stylebook.
- Strong team player and experience working on cross-functional teams.
- Strong story telling capabilities.
- Ability to travel (<20%) and work evening hours as necessary to prepare for early morning email distribution of ABA Daily Newsbytes.
