The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association, is seeking a program manager to organize and advance multiple initiatives supporting public libraries. This grant-funded position will support projects PLA develops for its members, such as education and professional development, mentoring and networking, tool/resource development and distribution, sharing of model programs, and more.
Responsibilities: The position will manage a range of projects addressing digital literacy and technology skill development for library customers and staff; workforce development and employment support programs offered in libraries; and adult education initiatives. Projects involve coordinating subject matter experts; planning and staffing meetings and educational programs; developing written and educational content; and drafting informational and marketing communications. Some reporting and other administrative duties are also required. Assistance with fundraising will be required to initiate and/or sustain projects.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Provide staffing support for assigned groups by scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, note-taking, and following up on actions; • Assist subject matter experts for PLA’s digital literacy initiatives to develop and publish or present computer and technology training courses; • Coordinate with web and instructional design vendors to improve PLA’s digital literacy (computer and Internet) training tools, and promote their use to public libraries; • Analyze user and usage data from PLA’s digital literacy platform and programs to improve project strategy; • Develop content for educational programming with PLA member leaders; • Create communications about assigned projects, to educate the public library field and encourage participation; • Prepare reports on project accomplishments for PLA staff and board leadership, funders, external partners, and others; and • Conduct research and outreach to potential funding sources.
Starting Salary: Negotiable from the low 60s, based on relevant experience. ALA offers a comprehensive and valuable benefits package that includes generous paid vacation and retirement annuity.

This is a full-time, grant-funded, in-house position based in Chicago, IL. The grant funding requires reporting and renewal but is currently projected to last through 2026.

At least five years’ experience in an association or other nonprofit; computer skills including proficiency with productivity tools and data analytics programs (instructional design software experience also preferred); interest and some experience in computer literacy, employment, adult education; ability to develop work-plans and project schedules and execute them; strong writing skills.
