The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) was founded in 1971 and is the largest dental student organization in the United States. With a membership of more than 23,000, ASDA represents 86% of dental students from all 66 dental schools. ASDA’s mission is to protect and advance the rights, interests and welfare of dental students. The association introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy. ASDA representatives vote in the ADA House of Delegates, sit on most ADA councils and commissions and comprise one of the most respected student organizations in the nation.
ASDA is located off Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, with a staff of 14 and an operating budget of $4.5 million.
The ASDA Publications Manager is responsible for managing ASDA’s print and electronic publications and relationships with outside vendors. S/he will oversee content, design and production of publications. Serves as staff liaison to the Editorial Board. Manages student-written blog and Word of Mouth e-newsletter.
Manage the art, content direction, design and production process for ASDA publications including Contour and student handbooks.
Develops and monitors publication policies and procedures to ensure high-quality, cost-effective production and distribution of ASDA publications.
Manages relationships with vendors for all print and digital publications.
Manages the content direction and production process for ASDA’s blog, Mouthing Off and edits incoming posts. Writes posts periodically.
Manages digital publications; develops new opportunities and evaluates technologies to grow ASDA’s digital publication presence.
Manages the publications section of ASDA website including featured content, previews and updates after each published issue.
Serves as the staff liaison to the Editorial Board. Attends meetings, prepares agendas and meeting minutes, and coordinates Editorial Board activities. Support the editors in achieving strategic goals, planning editorial board meetings and developing reports for the Board of Trustees.
Trains student editors on editorial style, copy editing and working with authors. Provides journalistic guidance and support on content development.
Creates content for monthly Word of Mouth e-newsletter.
Manages ASDA’s stock photography subscription.
Develops and manages publications budget.
Manage annual USPS statements of ownership process for print publications.
Manage publications follow-up: correspondence with authors, send marked-up copies to US Post Office and archive past publications.
Fulfills other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in journalism or communications-related field.
Five or more years experience writing and editing articles in a publishing environment, preferably for an association.
Knowledge of healthcare industry and association experience is preferred.
Strong project manager who can meet deadlines, communicate and keep others on track.
Experience working with designers to provide art direction for publications.
Demonstrated experience managing volunteers.
Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
Proficient in A.P. style.
Excellent communication, time management, problem-solving and organizational skills.
Must be professional, creative, detail-oriented and have excellent interpersonal skills.
Experience using MAC and WordPress or other blog software encouraged. Knowledge of desktop publishing and photo software (InDesign and Adobe Photoshop) a plus.
Some travel and weekend/overtime required.
