The Society of Women Engineers is seeking a Vice President of Learning Programs who, building on the organization’s past successes, will strengthen its capacity to continue to lead the way. SWE developed this new position to meet the needs outlined in the new strategic plan. Reporting to the CEO, this position is a member of the executive team and will work closely with the CEO to ensure the SWE is a leader in innovative education and lead a professional team that oversees a range of programs throughout the year.
Lead a team accountable for overall planning, implementation, and effectiveness of professional development strategies and initiatives, including the WE Annual and WE Local Conferences
Oversee and direct all activities related to planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of professional development strategies and initiatives targeting women engineers and engineering students.
Collaborate with marketing team to promote professional development activities
Establish high levels of quality, accuracy, and process consistency
Ensure ongoing compliance and maintenance of the Policies and Procedures and other external requirements and guidelines
Oversee a learning management system (LMS) that ensures effective learning outcomes
Maintain status as an accredited provider of CEUs with national certification/credentialing organizations
Identify changes in the learning and professional development environments and evaluate and adjust the departmental plans and processes accordingly
Foster a culture and framework of innovation and excellence
Develop, implement, and evaluate the departmental budget
Collaborate with senior staff on various strategic initiatives
Serve as staff liaison to assigned committees, task forces, and volunteers
Identify and implement new technologies and methodologies
Specific Responsibilities of the Vice President Learning Programs
The Vice President meets and collaborates directly with SWE’s executive team to provide strategic direction, coordinated planning, and internal and external communication. Specific responsibilities include:
Provide strategic direction for the SWE’s learning initiatives. Create and manage the long-term goals in learning implementation and evaluation of education programming initiatives.
Align the SWE’s programs with the latest ideas on learning. Curate current organization trends; strategize around building innovative programs.
Communicate with all areas of the SWE about the department’s strategic direction and initiatives and critical information about programs in direct reflection of the SWE
Further develop SWE’s strategy for leadership and D&I programs that reflect current community engagement, content approaches and interpretation towards relevant issues and broad
Align SWE programming with audiences and implement innovative ways to fulfill programming to multi-generational members and customers. Address and promote the contribution of a diversity of perspectives. Promote civic engagement based on a broad definition of engineering.
Lead and oversee an expanding portfolio of conferences and events through the year.
Education and Audience Engagement Program Development and Evaluation:
Develop curricula goals for the entire spectrum of the SWE’s potential audiences
Oversee the strategy and development for student programs
Oversee the strategy and development of professional development programs
Evaluate and report program status and achievements, including change in learning, social and organizational outcomes annually.
Develop partnerships with a variety of organizations to create and implement programming. Align with local, national, and international initiatives. Strengthen the SWE’s partnership with the community to better serve key audiences. Build relationships and credibility with universities.
Represent the SWE at US and global workshops and conferences to help the organization remain a leader in professional development
Serve as the key staff liaison with the Board of Directors’ committees that focus on learning initiatives.
Marketing and Fundraising:
Collaborate with the Strategic Partnerships department on developing funding proposals for current and new large-scale initiatives. Engage corporate partners and steward relationships with current and prospective partners. Ensure that relevant commitments are met. Support development staff in evaluating potential funding sources for departmental programs and
Ensure that departmental areas have a strong marketing strategy and digital presence.
Create and oversee a robust education and engagement evaluation process that evaluates the quality and impact of all learning programs. Develop and implement action steps during and immediately following
At least 10 years of proven experience in program development and conference management in associations or other formal/informal education settings
Experience with accreditation and certification organization criteria, policies, standards, and processes
Advanced degree in relevant field
Successful track record of developing and managing creative programming initiatives
Strong teaching, writing and presentation skills
Hands on program and curriculum development
Staff management of creative, smart, and independent thinkers
Collaborative and flexible attitude; ability to reprioritize when needed
Knowledge of program evaluation and metrics
At least 5 of the years in a strategic leadership role
Data driven, systems thinker who can generate and execute ideas at strategic and tactical levels
Ability to integrating disparate activities, new technologies, and agendas while adhering to deadlines and budgets
Instinctive collaborator with strong staff management experience who values teamwork and the input of others
A passion for learning and professional development and the ability to clearly articulate ideas and concepts
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand the big picture
Experience working with and providing strategic direction to volunteers
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office applications; Internet and technology savvy
Experience with contract negotiations.
Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
